Vendor Spotlight: Birchbark Books

In the heart of Minneapolis, Birchbark Books is more than just a bookstore. It’s a community space rooted in culture, storytelling, and connection. Founded in 2001 by Louise Erdrich, an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, the shop was created to center Native and Indigenous voices in literature while still embracing a wide range of stories for all readers.

The name itself carries deep meaning. Traditionally, books in Anishinaabe culture were recorded on birchbark, and this legacy continues through the store’s identity. It honors the past while creating space for modern storytelling.

Over the past 25 years, Birchbark Books has grown into a carefully curated space filled with intention. You’ll find books for all ages and interests, with a strong emphasis on Native-authored works across every genre. Beyond books, the shop features a thoughtful selection of Native-made goods. This includes jewelry, art, body products, food items, journals, and unique gifts. Each item reflects the creativity and craftsmanship of Indigenous makers from across the Midwest and beyond.

Part of that growth came from a desire to uplift even more Native-owned businesses. A staff member who joined the team four years ago recognized an opportunity to expand the store’s offerings. After researching Indigenous brands, they began introducing new products into the space. What started as a small addition quickly became a meaningful part of the shop.

The response from customers says it all.

Hearing someone walk in and say, “Have you tried this tea? It’s incredible!” or “I’ve never seen this before, I have to try it,” is exactly the kind of experience Birchbark Books hopes to create. It’s about discovery, connection, and sharing something special.

At its core, the mission of Birchbark Books is to create a welcoming and inclusive space where everyone feels at home. It’s a place where cultural teachings are honored, Native voices are elevated, and small businesses support one another. That sense of community is felt the moment you walk through the door.

That same mindset is what led them to partner with Tribal Tea Co.

Supporting Native-owned brands is a natural extension of their values. After trying Tribal Tea, the team quickly became fans. What started as a staff favorite turned into a customer favorite, with many people returning for their go-to blends. One standout? The Cinnamon Apricot, which continues to get rave reviews.

After 25 years, Birchbark Books is still growing and looking ahead. With deep roots in community and a clear vision, they remain committed to this work for many years to come.

If you ever find yourself in Minneapolis, it’s a space worth visiting. Not just to shop, but to experience something thoughtful, welcoming, and deeply rooted in community.
